Abstract

Pleural effusion can originate due to different alterations. Recent studies describe the importance of vitamin D and vitamin D related molecules in innate inmunity. This investigation evaluates the importance of this molecules in the formation of pleural effusion and explores their diagnostic usefulness in order to discriminate effusions. This is a prospective study in which samples from 163 patients admited from September 2010 to August 2012 were analyzed . The main conclusions of this study are: patients with pleural effusion have important rates of hipovitaminosis D, 1,25 (OH)2 vitanmin D and cathelicidin are higher in inflamatory pleural effusion, ß-defensin-2 is lower in patients with complicated pleural effusion. None of the molecules showed enough diagnostic usefulness when using ROC curve AUC analysis.
