Abstract
In order to discriminate the prognosis of ambulatory patients with chronic heart failure simple markers are needed. In this respect, brain natriuretic peptide has been shown useful. Also, the N-terminal portion of pro-brain natriuretic peptide, called NT-proBNP, has been shown of value to allow adequate discrimination of patients of highest risk in a population of advanced chronic heart failure referred for transplantation. We tried to establish the usefulness of an isolated measurement of NT-proBNP in the one year prognosis prediction of stable patients, with optimal treatment, in the setting of a habitual external consult, no a referent consult for patients with advanced chronic heart failure.
