Resumen

Goal: To compare between two biennia (1996-1997 and 1999-2000) the use of antimicrobials in a general hospital by separating the ICU from the rest of the departments. Methods: A retrospective study. The consumption data were obtained from the Pharmacy Department's computer database. As a technical unit of measurement, there were used the defined daily doses (DDD) established by the Nordic Council on Medicines and expressed per every 100 patients/day. Finally, it was calculated the percentage of change between the two biennia. Results: At the hospital, with exception of the ICU, the average consumption of the two biennia was 53.51 ± 8.52 DDD/ 100 stays-day, observing between them a global consumption decrease of 20.54%. At the ICU, the average was of 170.84 ± 6.97 DDD/ 100 stays-day, noticing between both of them an increase in consumption of 5.95%. At the hospital, the most consumed families were the penicillins, the cephalosporins, the sulfamides and their associations, the quinolones and the aminoglycosides. At the ICU, the most used ones were the aminogly-cosides, the cephalosporines, the penicillins, the glycopeptides and the carbapenems. Conclusions: Quantitatively and qualitatively, the ICU presents different characteristics from the rest of the hospital with respect to consumption, which deserve to be studied separately
