Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease in which myelin covering neurons of Central Nervous System is destroyed. This myelin is produced by oligodendrocytes and is made with proteins and fat. The attack is caused by Immune System of the patient, so is an autoimmune disease. The damage produces an inflammation that dissolves the myelin sheath, the nervous transmission is disrupted and a large spectrum of symptoms appear (from motor involvement to ocular dysfunction, among a lot of neurological disorders). In fact, this pathology is known as “The disease of a thousand faces”. These symptoms include optic neuritis, loss of sensitivity (paresis, pain, trigeminal neuralgia…), motor involvement (spasticity, paraplegia), sphincter dysfunction, sexual dysfunctions and psychic and psychiatric disorders, as are related in this article.
