Abstract

The anthropologic record found in Cueva de Santimamiñe (old excavations and modern fieldwork) is apparently scanty, dispersed and disordered. The mortuary use of the cave has been interpreted as a series of very sporadic inhumations during the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age. The modern reappraisal of the deposit has confirmed this hypothesis as it has revealed a long discontinuous mortuary sequence, with some significant uses, such as a burial in the late sixth millennium cal BC.
