Abstract

“The school canteens” was an institution that developed in Spain in the early years of the 20th century. It was a philanthropic initiative, inserted in the regeneration movement, of growing interest in childhood, hygiene and school health. San Sebastián was one of the first Spanish capitals to have this service. It was promoted by the “Society for the Protection of the School Canteens of San Sebastián”, with the support of the Donostiarra City Council. The characteristics, formation of the new canteens, admission characteristics and its evolution are reviewed and a comparison is made with the Cantinas of Bilbao, less developed in those years.
