Thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint injuries are very common while practising Karate-Do, football, ciclying, gymnastic and skiing. Its treatment depends on the injurie ́s characteristics. Due to the anatomy, these injuries need a high soft tissues contrast for its study, and that is what makes Magnetic Resonance (MRI) such an effective technique for its diagnosis. The aim of this article has been to analyze MRI role in front of an injury in the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the MCP joint. A retrospective study was carried out to achieve this aim, in which 15 patients met inclusion criteria. 13 of them received the expected diagnosis, while 2 were affected by movement artefacts. All of them carried out during 2016 in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Due to its high soft tissue contrast and its multiplanar capacity, the MRI is highly sensitive to study the collateral ligaments of the MCP joint, enabling to diagnose both acute and chronic injuries.
