Abstract

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the obstetric population has been considered a risk group, describing maternal-fetal complications arising from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Given the high cumulative incidence of COVID-19 cases and deaths in La Rioja at the beginning of the pandemic, a universal screening of pregnant women for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 was implemented in our hospital. Between March 30 and April 26, 2020, 130 women gave birth at our center. All of them were screened with RT-PCR test of nasopharyngeal exudate samples. 19 (14.6%) were positive, with no associated respiratory symptoms. Of the 111 negatives, 3 were positive during the puerperium, presenting fever and mild respiratory symptoms. Universal screening of pregnant women minimizes the risk of viral transmission by identifying and isolating asymptomatic cases, optimizes the use of health resources and establishes specific follow-up of patients.
