Abstract
Study objective.- We wanted to know the characteristics of the patients that visit the outpatient section of our emergency department. Methods.- We performed a prospective study over 14 consecutive days with patients seen in the outpatient section of our emergency department. A questionnaire was used for collecting personal and clinical data and a statistical analysis was done. Results.- The mean age was 42,6±19,3. Peak visit days to the emergency department were monday and sunday, specially between 15 and 22 hours. Only 18% of the patients had visited their general practitioner previously. 76% of them showed a sending note from their general practitioner on their arrival to the emergency department. Only 6% of the patients needed admision. Most of the cases were within the clinical category of “badly defined signs and symptoms”. Conclusions.- Most of the patients assisted in the outpatient of our emergency department have not got a previous evaluation from their general practitioners and most of the patients do not need admission.
