OBJECTIVES: To develop a basic diagnostic protocol of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in emergency department and to establish inclusion and exclusion criteria for outpatient management with Low Molecular Weight Heparin (LMWH).DESIGN: We carried out a search in Medline from 1985 to 2002 using as key words: outpatient and home treatment, deep venous thrombosis and Low Molecular Weight Heparin. We evaluated inclusion criteria paying attention to thrombus location, age, possibility of follow up and non patient’s refusal. We excluded those patients at high risk of complications for recurrent thrombosis or bleeding, or symptoms of pulmonary embolism or the need for hospitalisation due to another illness. The protocol was approved for all involved services.CONCLUSION: We recommend to pay attention to inclusion and exclusion criteria if you are planning outpatient treatment of deep venous thrombosis in addition to have the availability of outpatient follow up system.
