Abstract

At the end of the 19th century, Neurosyphilis was one of the most common conditions among mental asylums’ inmates. At advanced stages of the disease, patients would develop impressive neuropsychiatric syndromes including the remarkable General Paralysis of the Insane (GPI), which used to lead to fatal outcomes as there were no effective treatments. At that time, it was thought that fever improved the clinical manifestations of psychiatric diseases. Building on this theory, Julius WagnerJauregg, an Austrian neuropsychiatrist, showed that the inoculation of blood infected with “Plasmodium” –the parasite responsible for malaria disease– was effective in many cases of GPI. His work was rewarded by the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1927.
