Abstract

In Primary Health Care (PHC), every 5 consultations, a need for knowledge arises, which must be translated into a clinical question to be answered. However, more than 60% of these were not sought.  In the official programs of pediatrics (medicine and nursing), the competencies related to research are collected, such as knowledge and skills necessary to improve clinical practice, the quality of care offered to people, and increase the knowledge of the specialty. Therefore, research should be a regular activity in PHC, but there is an important imbalance between the needs of knowledge and the research activity. In this sense, the difficulties in carrying out research in PHC are well known. However, the examples of research carried out in our context are numerous and varied in terms of research area, methodology and design. To achieve permanent and sustainable research projects in PHC, key challenges and strategies could include the training of professionals, the integration of PHC into the university and the creation of the necessary minimum infrastructure and research networks. The support units/services of the Health Research Institutes (OII) represent a unique resource for the professionals of the health system to be involved in or carry out their research projects. In addition, thanks to technological developments and the accessibility to data collection platforms, research networks focused on  specific pathologies have proliferated in all pediatric specialties. Research networks facilitate the exchange of knowledge and resources between physically distant multidisciplinary researchers, overcoming logistical, methodological and ethical barriers. How to initiate or become involved in research? There are different choices, such as, cultivating critical thinking and asking daily clinical questions, participating in ongoing projects, starting from a literature review, exploring unanswered questions or embarking on a doctoral thesis. It is essential to integrate research and knowledge management into the professional career to improve the quality of clinical practice.
