Resumen

La Neurosífilis era una de las patologías predominantes en los manicomios de finales del siglo XIX y en sus etapas tardías mostraba impactantes síndromes neuropsiquiátricos, entre los cuales destacaba la Parálisis General Progresiva (PGP), de evolución mortal y sin tratamiento eficaz. Por aquel entonces se pensaba que la fiebre mejoraba la clínica de las enfermedades psiquiátricas y siguiendo esta teoría un neuropsiquiatra austriaco, llamado Julius Wagner-Jauregg, mostró que la inoculación de sangre de pacientes infectados con “Plasmodium” –el parásito que provoca la malaria– resultaba eficaz en numerosos casos de PGP y por ello recibió el premio Nobel de Medicina en 1927.
