Abstract
While mortality due to burn accidents has been decreasing in recent years, the number of limitations and sequelae resulting from burn accidents remains constant or even increasing. Thus, the inclusion of this type of patient in rehabilitation referral protocols is crucial to achieve a better quality of life, provided that this approach is integrated within a multidisciplinary perspective that starts early, even in critical care units. This clinical case describes the physiotherapy treatment of a woman admitted to the burn unit after a self-harm attempt. The patient, who in the initial stages of admission did not ambulate autonomously, acquired a walking pattern by the time she was discharged from hospital without the need for supervision or technical aids, although with compensatory components. The main conclusions highlighted the importance of early initiation of rehabilitation treatment in burn units to prevent the development of sequelae and disability in cases of extreme severity such as major burns. However, research is still required to determine the parameters of choice for improving the musculoskeletal, biomechanical and functional state of these patients, while respecting other vitally important variables such as the state of the injured tissues and their psychological and emotional atmosphere.
